Bristol Old Vic Seeks Views Of Children and Young People For Interactive Audio Installation
The community project will run alongside climate change play
A Bristol theatre is asking young people to take part in an interactive audio installation to run alongside a show this May.
What does a beautiful future look like? Is the question Bristol Old Vic is asking the city’s children and young people to answer. It’s a community project aiming to bring together audio recordings for an installation in the foyer area.
The Beautiful Future is a new piece of writing by Flora Wilson Brown. It looks at the climate crisis from a different perspective.
“So often, conversations around climate change are dominated by fear and paralysis,” Wilson Brown says. “But storytelling has the power to shift perspectives. This play—and the youth voices project—are about reclaiming optimism, giving people permission to imagine a better world.”
The Beautiful Future is Coming is described as both hopeful and humorous, asking what if the future is still ours to shape? It brings together the lives of three women – one from the past, one from the present and one from the future – aiming to spark a conversation about environmental themes.
The Beautiful Future: Voices of Tomorrow is the installation which will run alongside the show. It will feature a 5 metre living tree, with recordings of the hopes as well as the concerns of young people regarding a greener and fairer future.
How to take part:
To take part in the audio installation, Bristol Old Vic says the following:
Young people (aged 8–25) are invited to submit a 30-120 second audio recording answering: “What does a beautiful future look like to you?” Maybe you want to read a letter to a child living in 2100? Maybe you’d like to write a poem or song about what you hope the world looks like in 50, 100 or maybe 1000 years’ time? It’s up to you!
Submissions are open throughout April until 05 May through voice memos* sent via email to the theatre at press@bristololdvic.org.uk. Don’t forget to include your name and age (first names will do).
Messages will be curated into an immersive soundscape, available for audiences to listen to at Bristol Old Vic.
A QR code & online playlist will allow people to engage with the project remotely.
*We can also accept alternative forms of entry for those with access requirements – please get in touch with press@bristololdvic.org.uk if you need any assistance.
