Bristol Theatre Company Brings Musical’s World Premiere To Clifton Theatre
The world premiere sees a collab between popular Bristol theatre company and award-winning composer
The premiere of a brand new musical will be taking place at the Redgrave Theatre in Bristol this year.
It sees Bristol Musical Theatre – one of the city’s longest-running amateur theatre companies – teaming up with multi-award-winning composer Phil Dixon and lyricist Elizabeth Major.
Jack, is a fast-paced musical inspired by 18th century real-life legend Jack Sheppard. Described as “high energy” storytelling with an “original gritty score” Jack brings to life the notorious gaol-breaker as well as the Georgian underworld he lived in.
“Jack represents everything we strive for as a community theatre group; bold storytelling, home-grown talent from our pool of members, and meaningful engagement with our audience,” BMT Chairperson Debs Tonkin says.

“It’s a thrilling new work that not only showcases our group’s creative energy, but also offers vital opportunities for performers, musicians, and volunteers to grow and shine. We’re incredibly proud to premiere this original musical by Phil Dixon in Bristol, and to bringa piece of history to life in a new way.”
The Backstage Trust has supported the theatre company with its period costumes and set. A further collaboration with Bristol Dry Gin and Shepton Mallet Prison has been helping the production to keep the show a properly local and historically accurate affair.
Set in a city of smoke and secrets, the show explores the line between criminality and celebrity, freedom and performance.
Audiences are told to expect “vibrant characters” and a “fast-paced” journey through Jack’s world.
Jack will be at The Redgrave Theatre in Bristol on Wednesday 29 April – Saturday 02 May 2026
