Did You Know Brunel was a Theatre Fan?
World-famous engineer loved Shakespeare
Bristol is Synonymous with Isambard Kingdom Brunel. We have his suspension bridge, Bristol Temple Meads and of course, the SS Great Britain.
The world famous ship was a feat of engineering. One of the risks Brunel took was rejecting paddle wheels and opting for a screw propellor.
You can walk on and under the magnificent ship, thanks to the restoration of Brunel’s SS Great Britain. One of Bristol’s best tourist attractions.

On your visit, don’t forget to pop into the Being Brunel part of the experience. It is a fascinating exploration about who Brunel was as a person.
One of the aspects of this is a recreation of Brunel’s Shakespeare Room. It is staged to show how the room looked in his Duke Street home in London.
Surprisingly, despite being involved in so many engineering projects, Brunel found time for the theatre. He loved theatre. In his Shakespeare room was paintings he commissioned from famous artists showing scenes from the playwright’s work.
Included in the room is a volume of the Complete Works of Shakespeare belonging to his son Isambard.
