Next Gen Bristol Creatives Stage New Theatre

Brand new show Superfan brings together new Bristol talent

It’s exciting to see the next generation of theatre makers from Bristol and its surrounding areas begin to emerge with brand new and original theatre.

Superfan – which comes to the Alma Tavern Theatre this June – is such an example of the region’s latest creatives collaborating together.

The show follows four 13 year old girls – Iris, Molly, Suzy and Dorothy – who have formed an obsessive fan club of movie star Paul Chamalordi.

They are addicted to updating their fan page @chamalordiupdates – even bidding for a strand of his hair on eBay.

When they win a fan competition to meet their idol in person, it seems like a dream come true. However, it’s not long until cracks emerge in their friendships. And is Paul Chamalordi everything he’s cracked up to be?

Superfan is described as a ‘sharp comedy’ exploring the obsessive and often toxic nature of fandom culture against the difficult experience of growing up.

The show is directed by Jazz Summer. She’s a recent graduate of the city’s acclaimed Bristol School of Acting. She’s already been making waves in the industry, picking up an Offies nomination for her debut play Wilt.

Last year, Jazz, one of the founding members of Segments Theatre Company, staged Wilt in the Spielman Theatre of Tobacco Factory Theatres. It was a strong start, tackling bereavement in a beautiful way.

For Superfan, the production once again is a truly local affair, proving Bristol is a strong city for creating brand new work.

The cast includes Sarah Gilmore and Toby Mitchell who trained at Bristol School of Acting. Lily Grace Oliver – the play’s writer – and Jake Janaway trained at Bristol Old Vic Theatre School. Kara Molloy studied at Bristol University.

As well as the cast, the creatives behind the show are also locally based.

Superfan is produced by Henry Lamb with Elizabeth Tattersall as stage manager, both of whom trained at Bristol School of Acting.

Production design is by Kate Evans who trained at Bristol Old Vic Theatre School.

Sound design is by Tom Smith of the Made in Bristol, Bristol Old Vic programme.

Set design is by Simren Jhalli and photography by Tom Foley, both from Bristol University.

Superfan will be at the Alma Tavern Theatre 17 – 18 June 2026
