Review – Suggs: A Life in the Realm of Madness Redgrave Theatre Bristol
Suggs came to the Redgrave Theatre in Bristol this weekend, with a show based on his life story
Postponed twice due to Covid, Suggs finally made it to the Redgrave Theatre in Bristol this weekend, with his one person show – alongside pianist Deano – telling stories about his life.
Growing up in the 80s as a huge Madness fan, which eventually expanded into The Specials and the wider Two Tone movement, this show was a must for me and I went to see it in a personal capacity with no plans to review. However, as it was such a fantastically entertaining evening, it was worth sharing further.
Suggs is a real character, a natural storyteller and of course, brilliant singer-songwriter. Just being a singer alone isn’t enough to sustain what is effectively a two-hour monologue . It’s his charisma and humour alongside his natural performing talents which makes the time fly by.
The show jumps between anecdotes, funny stories, tension, cliff hangers and songs all tied together around family themes and chance encounters.
Even if you’re not a particular fan, it has value as a piece of work exploring British social history, with reminiscence of council flat life and challenging family circumstances from 40 plus years ago not feeling a million miles away from the present.
Hearing stories of the Madness early days with Suggs singing much-loved songs from 40 years ago is at times a jarring experience. It’s hard to believe so many years have passed since songs like Embarrassment or Our House were released. The unique nature of Madness’ music means it all feels as fresh as the day of release.
The unplugged performance with Suggs and Deano is another fresh new take and it’s a really enjoyable experience being able to listen to the stripped back songs from the comfort of seats in the Redgrave Theatre.
I knew it was going to be a fun evening before it started, but it was even better than expected. It was like Christmas with family you actually like whilst being entertained by the likable uncle who has all the fun stories that are so bonkers, they must be true.
