The Woman in Black at Theatre Royal Bath
If you missed the run in Bath, it’s coming to Bristol Old Vic in 2026
The Woman in Black is a theatrical masterclass in storytelling.
Two actors and a laundry basket with mighty fine writing and fantastic lighting makes this one of the best on-stage ghost stories of all time.
When you’ve seen the show a few times, it’s just wonderful watching the way the story gradually slips from a staged reading into the main body of the story.
The lighting is exquisite. The tension makes you hold your breath, even when you remember what’s coming.
Of course there’s plenty of jumpscares. And the frustration of a man who is treading up the stairs when he should be heading out the door.
We went to see the current UK tour at Theatre Royal Bath on its final performance of the run in the city.
For this performance, actors John Mackay played Arthur Kipps and Daniel Burke was The Actor. They both gave compelling performances finding both the humour and the horror in the story.
Pulling off ghost stories on stage is incredibly difficult to do well. Not all succeed and certainly none in my experience have matched the god tier status of this fantastic play.
It was an institution in London, playing at the Fortune Theatre for over thirty years. It’s great to see the show tour now and long may it continue to do so.
If you missed out both in London and Bath, it’s coming to Bristol Old Vic in 2026.
