Micro Review – BeetleJuice The Musical – London

It’s been a long wait for this show to make the move from Broadway to a West End production, but it was worth it. This very self-aware show is a laugh a second with barely room to breathe.

Scott Brown’s book is excellent and brilliantly written for the stage. It takes the characters and the story we know and love and with a bit of a shake-up, we get all the best bits in a fresh new way. It’s possibly one of the best written shows in the West End at the moment.

It’s clearly been adapted to hit all the right comedic notes in the UK. And the Paddington musical gets a right slap.

The cast is on fine form, with outstanding performances from all.

Kenneth Posner’s lighting design is a just a joy from the moment you step into the auditorium, bathing the auditorium of the Prince Edward theatre in wonderful purples, greens and blues.

The iconic sign is present and correct and if you take a closer look, you can see finer details such as the sandworm around the proscenium arch.

The set for the London show has taken a bit of a pasting on the internet. It’s not the worst, but there is a bit of wobbliness at times. It’s really quite minimal.

The purists aren’t liking the departure of the huge house set from the Broadway production, which to be fair looks incredible on production shots.

However, it is what it is, and even with the scaled back set, the show still manages to be one entertaining night out.

This show is worth the trip from Bristol to London though we can also hope for a UK tour.
