Slave: A Question Of Freedom Tobacco Factory Theatres
True story about human slavery will be in Bristol on Anti-Slavery Day
Feelgood Theatre will be bringing a revival of Slave: A Question of Freedom to Bristol this October as part of a new national tour.
The play tells a true story of modern slavery and trafficking, something that takes place in our towns and cities right around the world.
It’s based on the life of Mende Nazer, a refugee who came to the UK as a place for saftey. She wrote autobiography Slave about her experiences.
Set in the Nuba Mountains of Sudan and moving to London, it follows Mende from her joyful childhood and into subsequent enslavement. Her story comes against a backdrop of famine, inhumanity and the horrors of modern slavery.
Eight actor-musicians bring the story to life on stage through storytelling, music and dance. At the heart of the performance is Mende Naze’s voice and spirit.
“In reviving and re-imagining Slave we hope to once again share the beauty of the Nuba culture and most importantly raise awareness of the global crime of modern slavery and current conflict,” Caroline Clegg, the artistic director of Feelgood Theatre said:
“Mende has asked me to use her voice to help others and my trip with her to the Nuba Mountains only served to redouble my efforts to do just that. This is more than just a play to those of us working on the production.”
Caroline has been raising awareness of modern slavery and the situation in Sudan as both a creative and with the Mende Nazer Foundation (MNF).
In 2016, both Mende and Caroline travelled undercover to the Nuba Mountains with medical aid. While they were there, they also recorded the testimonies of escaped slaves to inform the UK government of the situation.
Mende Nazer says: “My experience and my story is a personal story, but it touches so many people including our children, because I was a child when I was enslaved. I think my story will help other people who are still going through a similar situation and even worse with modern slavery. My story will raise awareness and alert so many people who still don’t know what’s going on in Sudan. I think it’s about helping other people to see such critical situation and help those enduring that difficult time in their life.”
Slave: A Question Of Freedom, aims to raise awareness of the war and famine in Sudan. It also asks people to recognise the humanity behind the headlines. Why are fifty million people around the world enslaved today?
Slave: A Question of Freedom is on at Tobacco Factory Theatres from 16 – 19 October 2024
Anti-Slavery Day takes place on 18 October 2024. Following the performance on this date, a post-show discussion will be taking place.
